Dark and Moody Exteriors

Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday weekend. Mine was just the right mix of fun and relaxation.

Recently we replaced our roof and gutters. Although not as exciting as decorating interiors, I wanted to be sure to choose a roof color that complemented our siding color (a mid range sandstone color). Looking around for inspiration I was struck by how the color of exterior siding has sifted from light to dark and moody. More and more people are choosing darker siding colors and complimenting it with lighter trim. I must say, I for one, love this trend.

Gray, brown, orange, navy or even black are all hot trends in exterior siding. New siding in your future? Get inspired by one of these great homes.

This exterior brings together all the elements I love. 10 &12 pitch roof lines, shake siding, dramatically contrasting trim, curved copper dormer, corbels, a single arched window that echos the arch over the door, all topped off with the perfect copper chimney cap. Bravo.:

Update - Master Bedroom Makeover

UPDATE

Our new mattress arrived today! We are one step closer to a whole new master bedroom. We chose a Sleep Number bed with an adjustable base mattress. Of course, this means there is quite bit of reading involved in order to operate it and we have to set up our Sleep IQ technology to track our sleeping patterns. I am looking forward to a great nights sleep tonight!

I thought I would share a few photos from today and show you our options for sheets and bedding. I will make the final reveal once the room is complete.

Keep checking back for more updates on our makeover. Until then . . .

Unique Kitchen Islands

Islands have become highly requested items in kitchen design. In addition to the fact that it provides a vast amount of counter space, it also provides a great hang out space for your family and guests. Since everyone tends to gather in the kitchen, it makes sense to have a area where everyone can congregate comfortably.

The possibilities for the design of an island are endless. You can design them with or without seating, have a sink or a cooktop installed or have space for a beverage fridge or microwave. Whatever your needs you can usually find an island design that is right for you.

Despite all these choices, most islands tend to follow the same design pattern. So, when I run across items that are unique I just have to share them. Check out these unique island designs.

Now this is thinking outside the box. Seating that is there when you need it but hidden when you don't.

Even better, hide your table when not in use.

Have a narrow kitchen? Try extending your island out and use stools.
Make the most of an unique layout with an equally unique shaped island.

Is your kitchen open to an adjacent sitting area? Add a focal point with an ethanol burning fireplace.

Or, install you t.v. in the island so the kitchen becomes part of your living space.

Create a more comfortable place to sit by changing out stools for a built in bench.

The Simple Beauty of Modern Design

Recently I have had some projects where modern design is the focus. While my style generally trends toward transitional, I am beginning to think modern may be the way to go. Soft colors, clean lines and a sophisticated feel all are hallmarks of this design style.

Modern style mixes woods and metals, keeps things clean and uses decor with simple lines. While some may think it feels cold, to me it says relaxing and sophisticated. The key to modern design is softening the hard edges with textures and colors. Round shades on square lamps, covering sofas and chairs in linen, leather or velvet, wood walls and differing shades of the same hue all work together to make a clean and restful space.

Here are few examples of rooms that nail modern design.

Master Bedroom Makeover

A few days ago, I wrote about our quest to find the perfect mattress. What I didn't say was we decided to redo our entire master bedroom. I cannot tell you how excited I am about this process. It has been a long time since I have redecorated a room in my own home not to mention our master bedroom and I can't wait to share it with you over the next few weeks.

We have had the same furniture in our master bedroom for 20 years. It has moved with us from house to house. However, after so many moves, the screws that hold the bed frame together just weren't up to the task any more. Additionally, our dressers are rustic in style and while I could work with that, I really wanted something different. However, what really prompted the change was our selection of a new king size mattress. We currently have a queen so switching to a king means neither our bed frame nor our bedding would work anymore.

I don't know about you but our bedroom is the last thing to get decorated. I have decorated the kids rooms, our guest room and our living spaces but I just never seem to get around to giving attention to our space. So, I finally decided it was time to change that. Having a restful, well decorated space to end the evening is something I am really looking forward to.

I unfortunately did not get a before photo of our bedroom however, I have some shots of when I set up my desk area.

This weekend we took down our bed to make way for our new mattress. We chose a split king with an adjustable base. I can't wait until I can watch t.v. comfortably and get a good nights rest. Here is are some photos of the process. There was quite a mess to clean up once we were done.

Our mattress set is scheduled to arrive tomorrow afternoon. The bed frame and furniture are due later this month.

One problem I encountered after purchasing our mattress was selecting sheets. Since we chose a split king we need two twin xl fitted sheets and one king flat sheet. This means I cannot purchase sheets that come in sets. Interestingly, this is not as easy as it may seem as most places sell sheets in sets. Additionally, we prefer standard size pillows so we will need three pillow cases rather than the standard two to fill in the extra width on the bed.

I have been on the hunt for sheets this week and will make my selection today. I have already purchased our new duvet cover and shams so I need to find sheets that coordinate with that.

Wish me luck! I will keep you updated on the progress of our makeover. Until then . . . Happy Decorating!
